Week two of the college football season had its share of craziness. NIU defeated (5)Notre Dame, Alabama had to battle USF throughout the whole game, teams like Penn State, K-State and others pulled out narrow victories. It appeared that it was going to be a day of topsy-turvy madness. However, that was not the case in Charlotte as the Volunteers and Wolfpack met up for just the fourth time in history.
Tennessee seemed to sputter out of the gate offensively, but the Volunteer defense was dominating from the jump. It wasn't long before Tennessee started to find its rhythm on offense. However, leading 10-3 in the second quarter, walk-on safety Will Brooks recorded his first career interception, taking it all the way back for the touchdown, effectively, and permanently shifting the momentum in Tennessee's favor, extending the Volunteer lead to 17-3. The Vols added another field goal just before the half, and assumed possession to start the second half.
In the blink of an eye, the lead swelled beyond three possessions, then four, before ballooning to over 40 points, 51-10, late in the game, bringing the score to its final.
The Vols allowed less than 200 total yards the entire game, including just 39 yards on the ground. The Tennessee defense also had three takeaways, including two fumble recoveries and an interception.
Tennessee made a statement with this game, showing that it's not only the offense that opponents will need to be aware of, but the defense as well. A lot of people knew the name James Pearce prior to this game, and rightfully so, but names like Tyre West, Boo Carter, Jermod McCoy, Omar Norman-Lott, Will Brooks and others will soon become synonymous with completely blowing up offenses.
