All Vol Call In Show
Tennessee fans have eagerly awaited college football’s grand return since the start of the year. And now that it’s back, the Vols are 4-0—just as any true “knower of ball” would’ve predicted. But here we are, stuck in the limbo of the first of two bye weeks. Speaking of which, isn’t “bye” a curious word? It sounds just like “by,” yet means something entirely different. Gotta love the quirks of the English language. Spanish has its oddities too—did you know “el” can mean both “he/him” and “the”? Wild, right? And yes, I know what you’re thinking—homophones, am I right? Bet you did a double-take on that one!
Anyway, if you’re craving some Tennessee Athletics but are stuck with nothing to watch, don’t fret. I’ve put together a movie list that ties back to the Vols in one way or another. So, grab your popcorn and settle in!
LAND OF BAD (2024)Streaming on Netflix at the time of this writing, Land of Bad is your typical war/action movie—with a unique twist. IMDb states, “A Delta Force team fights for survival as an Air Force drone pilot becomes its eyes in the sky.” And here’s a fun tidbit: some of the characters sneak in a few Vols games during the action, cheering for the Big Orange. It’s a fun watch!
ROAD TRIP (2000)First off, maybe don’t watch this one in front of the kids. This classic raunchy comedy from the 2000s involves four college buddies embarking on a road trip to retrieve an illicit tape mistakenly mailed to a female friend. According to IMDb, “Four college buddies embark on a road trip to retrieve an illicit tape mistakenly mailed to a female friend.” We’ve all been there before, right? Ok, maybe not. It’s a laugh riot and has several scenes filmed in Knoxville, including one inside Neyland Stadium! Streaming for free on PlutoTV.
W.W. AND THE DIXIE DANCE KINGS (1975)Another comedy, but this one is family-friendly with a PG rating. IMDb describes it as “W. Bright is a robber with a heart of gold who travels the South knocking off banks and gas stations owned by a corrupt businessman.” Burt Reynolds stars in this 1975 film, and it features the famous “How ‘Bout them Vols?” line. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a streaming option, but if you can track it down, it’s worth watching.
SANDS OF IWO JIMA (1949)An old John Wayne classic should be enough to entice you. According to IMDb, “Haunted by personal demons, Marine Sgt. John Stryker is hated and feared by his men, who see him as a cold-hearted sadist. But when their boots hit the beaches, they begin to understand the reason for Stryker's rigid form of discipline.” While Tennessee Football isn’t mentioned, the film does reference Tennessee as the “Volunteer State,” and says it is the best state in the union which still rings true today. You can find this one on Apple Video, Amazon Prime, and other services.
Well, I’m not gonna lie. I’m writing this on September 14th (called my shot by saying the Vols would be 4-0), and Alabama/Wisconsin is about to kick off. So, I’ll wrap it up here. Let me know if I missed any good ones!
